Mechanical Problem

Having mechanical issues with my 2010 BMW R1200GS with only 12K on it when I left Reno Thursday. Either clutch or drive train. Started about 200 miles into Canada. Have made it this far but getting worse by the day. Tried to get the Harley-Davidson/BMW dealer in Fairbanks to order the parts and charge my credit card. Being a Harley dealer they wouldn't do it. Why BMW let's dealerships be shared with HD idiots is beyond my comprehension as that don't understand what motorcycling is. They only sell HD clothing, etc. Anyhow, they won't order parts until they can see the bike so I'll leave here Tuesday at 04:30 and see how far I can get. It's 850 miles to Fairbanks with a speed limit of 62mph in Canada. The plan is to reach the Fairbanks dealer by noon Wednesday, hopefully they'll look at the bike and order the parts. This is what a TRUE BMW dealer does with folks that tour.

After all the planning it's tough to have a NEW bike fail and to receive poor support from a BMW dealer. Doesn't say much for the product line.

Keep your fingers crossed.

  1. Doug,

What a disappointment! We hope you have great weather and smooth travels to Fairbanks, and a speedy and permanent repair to the BMW. (I remember when you were hitting the road daily in the very early morning 16 years ago to beat the 100ยบ+ heat -- this is a little different!)

We're enjoying your daily dispatches and look forward to many more.
